New Blog

Welcome to my new blog! I hope I can keep up the posting often enough. Since this is my first experience with blogging I don't know how to start. I guess I will start by telling about my day.

The boys had their doctor's appointments today. I found out that our pediatrician also homeschools her son. That was a pleasant surprise. She is the perfect pediatrician for our family. She has kids with ADHD/dyslexia/learning issues, knows a lot about autism and has even been on the special diets herself along with her family! And she homeschools!

H had to get 2 shots. He was very brave. Two pinches and he's all better. It was great.

For homeschool today we listened to more Percy Jackson and The Sea of Monsters. We've started listening to audio books because W has a hard time sitting still to read. It's really amazing though, he can play his DS and listen to a story at the same time looking like he's not paying attention. But if you ask him detailed questions about what just happened in the story he's got it all! It's tough to remember that though because he totally looks like he's not paying attention whatsoever until you ask him.

As far as the audio vs. reading thing goes I try to look at it this way: First, W CAN read. I've seen him do it for video games and things he's really interested in. So I know he's capable of the act of reading. He still has trouble with a word here and there, but that's okay. Second, blind people can not read because they have a disability that prevents them from doing so (Braille notwithstanding). Third, MY son also has a disability that doesn't entirely prevent but makes it very difficult for him to read; his autism which causes him to have to move around a lot and for him to need much more stimulation than a book can give him. Audio books allow him to enjoy literature in a way that he seems to need. This might seem obvious to other people, but when I first started trying audio books, this newest being our third, I sort of felt like it was cheating because he wasn't actually reading the books. It was only really recently after our first book club meeting that I came to this realization. So we're going to continue with that for now
